Struggle for the environment,

More FUN(GO) in the USC

JOHN EMMANUEL FUNGO IS OUR USC COUCILOR

The struggle for the environment is the struggle for the people. John Emmanuel FUNGO has been immersed in the people’s struggle for a better environment.

The country is one of the richest in the world in terms of mineral deposits and natural resources however, they are inaccessible to most of us. The government’s blind lenience to foreign companies continues to leave us poor and suffering from polluted bodies of water, deforested mountains, and endangered biodiversity. We have also become more vulnerable to environmental disasters for which we still lack preparedness.

The University isn’t spared from environmental issues. We experience air pollution and still have problems with chemical and solid waste disposal. The Environmental Education Act which is hoped to raise the environmental awareness of the students is not yet implemented. The UP Community is still calling for justice for Leonard Co from the Institute of Biology and an environmental advocate.

Through environmental campaigns and actions, FUNGO has gained knowledge on the real state of the Philippine environment and its effects on the Filipino people. He did not learn this in a short while. During activities inside and outside the university, he consciously learned from the students and the people. And until now, he still continues to learn.

FUNGO, a B.S. Geology student, graduated with honours from the Philippine Science High School and is a DOST scholar up to the present. Along with his exemplary academic performance, he is an active member of various organizations. He leads and participates in events ranging from debate tournaments to theatre productions, from EnViTalk publications to coastal clean up’s and mobilizations. FUNGO is also the Environmental Committee Head of the Geology Majors Society (UP GeMS) and its official representative to the UP Youth for Earth Alliance and member of AGHAM Youth – Student Advocates of Science and Technology for the People).

FUNGO has been with students to fight for our rights to education and basic social services. FUNGO has been participating and organizing events for the environmental awareness. Partnered with pro-people and pro-environment policies, advancement in science and technology could play a big role in sustainable development. This will enable us to extract our own mineral deposits and cut down trees based on our needs. With the looming effects of climate change, this will increase our capacity to adapt and lessen the risks brought about by environmental hazards. Support for education means more researches geared towards development for all.

FUNGO in the USC assures us of a leader who actively listens to the students and examines the conditions of the University as an integral part of the nation building. His long list of credentials shows his commitment to help save the environment founded on his commitment to serve the people. With FUNGO, we will unite to come up with solutions that we will be actively part of. We will resolve to fight for accessible and sustainable natural resources and science and technology for the people.

Exercise our right to vote on March 1, 2012. Vote for the environment. Vote for the people.
