farm lyfeThis is to announce that the League of Youth For the Environment (LYFE) will have its 3rd Environmental Advocacy Youth Camp on October 24-27 at a farming community in Tungkong Mangga, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. For this year, our theme will be FARM LYFE: Pursuing Sustainable Agriculture through Youth Involvement in the Communities. Member organizations are highly encouraged to send representatives to participate in the YC. Though anybody can join the YC, it is highly encouraged that the representatives have the leadership capacity to share and apply what they have learned in the youth camp.

A contribution of P250 will be collected from each participant. This will cover the jeepney rental for transportation and donation to the community. However, each organization from UP Diliman members is guaranteed one (1) representative who can join without having to pay the contribution.

This year, the LYFE YC will focus on the role of sustainable agriculture in protecting the environment and also the role of the youth in promoting it. The farming community that will host our YC is currently doing organic farming as a method of practicing sustainable agriculture.

Organic farming uses less or even no commercial chemical-based pesticides and fertilizers. This means it prevents land degradation and also less harmful chemicals in our food. Organic farming is one of the ways to address climate change by minimizing CO2 emissions by lessening or abandoning the use of oil-based pesticides and fertilizers.

By participating in this YC, we will have a deeper understanding of sustainable agriculture and learn it from the perspective of those who directly practice it. This experience will also provide a deeper insight about the situation of the 75% of the Philippine population.

A mini-relief drive for the host farming community will be conducted, as they were affected by the Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. We encourage our friends and colleagues to donate rice, canned goods, and noodles for the 100 families in Tungkong Mangga. Repacking and the receiving of donations will be at the Agham Office at 26 Matulungin St., Brgy. Central, Diliman, QC. Please coordinate with Loi at 0915 428 5476.
